Designed by internationally renowned architect, Frank Gehry, the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, which is to be the new location for the School of Business at the University of Technology Sydney, is a structure of conflicting architectural styles and geometries. In contrast to the brutalist UTS tower that has dominated the Broadway cityscape for the past 30 years, The Dr Chau Chak Wing Building is deconstructivism in its’ most abstract form blended with a natural building finish; achieved by the sandstone coloured brick exterior.
The complex geometry of the building, whereby each slab level is offset from the slab below, creates a warped pattern in the brick and glass facades. This is particularly complicated for the brick design of the project; as the twist and lean (in and out) in the brick goes against the traditional principles of brick design.
