Cantilevered Glass Stair Complete

The final product. The verdict

The glass stairs are complete, in use and the talk of the town.

Our client and architect are pleased with both the visual aesthetic of the construction as well as the structural and dynamic performance of the system. The rigidity and dynamic response of the stair case has met and exceeded all requirements. Our engineering and detailing of the connections and glass make up has contributed significantly to the success of this project. The low iron glass used in the final product adds to this impressive addition to the home.

This impressive piece of glass architecture and engineering was designed and developed over a period of months and prototyping was incorporated to verify the concept design and alleviate any concerns about its feasibility.

We have enjoyed working on this project and the technical challenges and development of the solutions have been savoured.

Innovative Warm roof construction new for Australia – The Arboretum roof to be safe and dry

Surface Design completes condensation assessment for the iconic Arboretum roof Canberra. http://www.nationalarboretum.act.gov.au/.

Surface Design have completed thermal and condensation assessment of the proposed Arboretum roof build up, the study has resulted in the adoption of a warm roof construction normally reserved for the colder climate of the north hemisphere.

The design is a departure from other similar scale roof spaces that have been previously used in Canberra but rely on ventilation of the roof space. The driving force for the warm roof construction has been the unique geometry of the roof form, the use of sensitive materials in Zinc roofing sheeting and timber and the need to meet various construction requirements.

Surface Design developed a unique roof build-up with the architect (Tonkin Zulikah Greer) and industry. The assessment was completed and verified using Physibel software which bases it assessment on the European Glaser method.

Surface Design look forward to the construction phase of this project and have enjoyed the challenges presented in this outstanding building.

Coca-Cola Projects achieve 5 star Green Star Certifications

Coca-Cola fitout projects have been awarded 5 star Green Star Office Interiors v1.1 ratings with the Green Building Council of Australia in August 2011. This is a great achievement for Coca-Cola and Surface Design as we add more successful Green Star projects to our portfolio.

Surface Design Supports Oxfam

Surface Design supported Oxfam Australia in August by donating to Sub2zero team who included Angus Gordon from GPT Group who participated in the Oxfam Trailwalker 100km challenge

Oxfam Trailwaler is Australia’s largest fundarising endurance event, attracting more than 5,000 participants annually in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney and the target this year was to raise more than $6million for the work of Oxfam Australia. You can make a difference

The Surface Design recyclable packaging initiative has been adopted globally by China Southern Glass replacing their polystyrene packaging for glass samples with a cardboard alternative.

We are very pleased that CSG has responded in a responsible way to our environmental concerns and that we have been able to have a positive influence on how companies do business.

Welcome Trinh Cao

We are very proud to welcome Trinh Cao to Surface Design.
Trinh brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our team; both in his generosity as a person and of course his passion – materials science.

Trinh is respected in the scientific community having worked at the CSIRO for 15 years and in industry as a consultant for a similar amount of time.

His experience in materials is vast, ranging in all aspects of materials used in construction whether it is finishes or corrosion protection, concrete properties and mix design, plastics, metals, welding, ceramics or adhesives, Trinh has studied, tested and reviewed it.

Trinh’s skills stand alone and underwrite both our facade and sustainable design teams providing a level of in house advice not attainable to most consultancies.
